Proponents of Traditional Neighborhood Design (TND) have revived the old practice of multiple steps at every entrance, at a time in history when this is singularly inappropriate. The older demographic is mushrooming, younger people with disabilities are living much longer than in past decades, and all have increased intentions to participate in community. To reverse its negative social effects, TND must stop relying on steps to signal a traditional aesthetic and begin routinely to implement solutions like those below.
- A housing complex with zero step entrances provided by concrete walkway.
- Raised alley leads to zero step entrances via attached garages in Austin, TX.
- A house with a zero step entrance provided by a ramp leading to the back entrance.
- A home with a zero step entrance leading to a front porch.
